Title
Perry Knitting Co. Draft Deferment Requests, 1917
Description
The Selective Service Act of 1917 was enacted on May 18 of that year. It required all males aged 18 to 30 years to register for military conscription; the first registration took place on June 5. Individuals who were employed in agriculture or industrial labor essential to the war effort were granted a temporary exemption. This document lists the PKC employees, along with their draft number in most cases, for the purposes of an exemption due to the mill's production of clothing for the military.

It also happens to be a very useful document for the purposes of understanding the mill's organizational structure and (male) individuals working in each section.
