Title
George M. Traber on Women Cutters
Description
Letter to Local Board #571 of the Selective Service System shows the President of Perry Knitting Co. attempting to secure as many deferments for his (male) employees as possible. In this case, he argues that women in the Cutting Room lack the strength to handle a full 40 lb. batch in a single cut, and the resulting half-batches slow down production 50%. Traber also argues there is not enough room to locate the additional workers to compensate. Not a Rosie the Riveter moment.<br />

Although this document is not dated, its typewriter style and contemporary newspaper accounts suggest it was composed during World War II.
