Title
The Cutting Machine
Description
From the Rice Collection annotation: "8 x 10 black and white photograph inside the Perry Knitting Company showing the cutting machine and two women who ran it, about 1960, one of the women is Mrs. Kwiecien."
A fuller story is given in the "Perry Knitting Company News" feature in the Perry Herald (30 June 1955: 11): "The two girls with the nice smiles are Irene Kwiecien on the left and Blanche Monteleone on the right." They're using a cutting machine allowing for handling flat fabric for Nitey Nite sleepwear instead of being knit in tube form. So "the girls" are operating the new machine for winter weight sleepwear, although the work looks strenuous. Their aprons show the stains of hands-on engagement with the machinery.
