Title

Residence and Mill of C.S. Gilbert, East Avon, Livingston County, N.Y.

Description

Following an apprenticeship in milling, Charles Sewell Gilbert immigrated from England in his young twenties--initially to Rochester and Penfield. He relocated to Avon in 1855 and purchased an existing mill. His sons later followed him into the business on North Avon Road. The smokestack at center probably is related to Gilbert's addition of steam power, a safety against variable levels of Little Conesus Creek.
