Title
Topographical Map of the City of New York
Description
At the time this map was created in 1865, the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 already had conceptualized Manhattan's grid above Houston Street and below 155th. But the city was far from filled in, and some of the island's original watercourses still were visible even as sewer lines were being laid. Viele's map shows both, and also divides the types of land as Marsh (dark green), Made Land (orange), and Meadow (light green).<br />
