Description

Founded in 1968, this community arts organization is located on the Mount Morris, NY campus that once had been a tuberculosis hospital (specifically a suite of doctors' residences pictured here). During the 1930s, and before the development of antibiotics, it was thought that soothing art would help the patients.

Thus it came to pass that more than 200 paintings from the Federal Arts Project were loaned to the hospital. When it closed in 1971, those paintings were stored in underground passageways between buildings until arts activists created the New Deal Museum to show them publicly. Today, the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts continues to expand access to those paintings, create contemporary exhibitions in its galleries, support local artists through Statewide Community Regrants, and host public events.

Of relevance to the Geneseo Migrant Center, many of its remaining documents are stored at the GVCA.
