Title
Putting on the Sowing-Sheet
Description
During a time when wheat and other grains were hand-sown, there were debates as to the most effective methods. This illustration accompanied a description of a "sowing-sheet," which was a piece of square linen folded into a kind of sling, "having an opening large enough along one side of its mouth to allow the head and right arm of a man to pass through, and the portion passed under rests upon his left shoulder....,The right arm, which throws the seed, finds easy access to the grain from the open side of the mouth of the sheet, between the left hand and the breast of the sower" (267).
