Influential account of two years lived near Walden Pond, MA by Transcendentalist writer. One recurring theme in the text is the search for a home and its cost, which Thoreau defined as "the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately or in the long run." Rather than laboring to pay for a more conventional home, Thoreau builds his own cabin and conceives of home as the larger space surrounding it.
The book's title page illustration, created by Thoreau's sister Sophia, shows the 10' x 15' cabin and its woodshed in a cozy setting that echoes "life in the woods" as a pleasant, even domestic experience.
