Title

Description

George N. Comer was founder, in 1840, of a Boston "Commercial College" bearing his name. The subjects it taught were eclectic: penmanship, bookkeeping, commercial correspondence and computations, navigation, engineering, and surveying. The advertisement here is for Book-Keeping Rationalized, a volume that teaches a simplified double-entry bookkeeping intended for broad accessibility. Farmers did indeed keep accounts; it's unclear whether Comer's advertisement was effective.
