Upper Hunter Region, New South Wales

Description

Photograph in southern Australia shows the ecological impact of open-pit mining and coal-fired power plants. But Albrecht also argues that "changes to the landscape in the Upper Hunter region of NSW severely distressed the people who lived there, a feeling not previously captured in the English language." He therefore proposes the term solastalgia to name this feeling of displacement, defining it as "the homesickness you have when you are still at home."

The photo appears in OpenValley to support a timeline created for the New Deal Gallery entitled "Displacements."
