First settled in 1793, Le Roy was created in 1812 from a portion of the Caledonia land purchase; the two communities have continued to share a number of economic and familial ties. The large number of numbered points in this relatively small town speaks to its civic spirit, an effective Burleigh sales agent, or both. Several lawyers and patent medicine manufacturers are listed as "places"; two railroads not even on the map paid the toll to be listed, as well. Incorporated in 1814, Perry initially was an agricultural area that increasingly came to be known for its proximity to beautiful scenery: the popular resort area of Silver Lake (pictured at top center), and the Genesee River gorge eventually constituted as Letchworth Park. The availability of water from the Silver Lake outlet enabled a number of mills and other manufactures to be located in the town. Looking north, from Highland Park, we can trace the Genesee River to Lake Ontario. Several features from Rochester's earliest days still are visible: the Erie Canal (and its viaduct across the Genesee), mills along the gorge near High Falls, the neighborhood of Corn Hill, Mt. Hope Cemetery, and more. Although the panorama doesn't have numbered points and a legend, street names are clearly visible and many commercial buildings are labeled. Founded in 1803 from the Holland Purchase tract, agriculture followed the clearing of timber and by the later 19th century the town's economy was a mix of farming, milling, manufactures, and (most recently) salt mining. Burleigh uses great ingenuity to depict five different salt mines on his panorama, located along the two main railroads passing through Warsaw. The main appeal was its situation alongside Flint Creek--outlet for Canandaigua Lake--and the water power that delivered for manufacturing. The map shows a wheel works, drill factory, paper mill, planing mill. A branch of the New York Central & Hudson River Rail Road also passes through town. Near this location are the headwaters of three major rivers: the Genesee, the Allegheny, and the Susquehanna. Or put another way, water from here flows to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Gulf of Mexico, and Chesapeake Bay. The image on this postcard in all likelihood was created first as a panoramic map, wholly or partially funded by citizens wanting to advertise the community as a commercial destination. In the years since, however, population has remained sparse and Ulysses is better known for its white supremicist activities. Springwater was established in 1816 and encompasses the highest point in Livingston County. Capt. John M. Brinker, a Buffalo businessman, had the perseverance to capitalize a tourist line running between the towns of Niagara Falls and Lewiston, running down through the gorge alongside the Niagara River. Despite considerable engineering difficulties, the line proved popular; tourists would ride in open-sided cars beholding the river's sublime power. A tourist rail line along the Canadian rim had been constructed in 1892, and the two companies were combined in 1902 resulting in the circular route show here. But the gorge's geology, namely a type of shale prone to erosion and rockfall, eventually doomed the railroad. There were fatal tourist accidents in 1907, 1915, and 1917; landslides destroyed portions of the rail lines and rendered it unprofitable. The company dissolved in 1935, but traces of the gorge railway still are visible today. This high-end version almost certainly owes its existence to the popularity of the Chautauqua Institution, founded in 1874 and pictured in the lower left foreground. The costs of creating and printing such documents presupposed investment by local merchants, buyers willing to purchase them, or both. In this pre-air-conditioned era lake resorts like those on Lake Chautaqua were popular destinations; we see railways and steamboats conveying visitors from many points of origin. In the foreground a horse and wagon pass by this orderly operation. Probably written for more affluent farmers, the article nevertheless becomes more granular in its advice than this simplified illustration. For example, even this pictorial view is informed by the principles of fields being relatively similar in size (for crop rotation), of keeping the fields nearly square (to minimize fencing), and creating a central farm road to access all of the fields.
