Burleigh's map. The Seneca village of Kanadaseaga at the northern end of Seneca Lake was located near the junction of land and water trade routes; British colonists recognized its strategic value and built a fort here that later was destroyed during the Sullivan campaign in 1779. This map shows a diverse economy with strong emphasis upon manufacturing, an orientation that persisted well into the 20th century. Although created by noted painter its appeal is easy to see for the Northern Pacific Railroad and its excursionary Yellowstone Park Line. The work shows natural features (Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Lake, geysers), several hotels, tourist features (wigwams, horse-drawn wagons), and of course the railroad infrastructure bringing visitors to the national park. Fort Yellowstone, located near the Mammoth Hot Springs, had been a necessary presence in the park's earlier days due to illegal poaching, mining, and tree-cutting. This bird's eye view appears in OpenValley as a contrast to the more minimalist style used by Lucien R. Title A name given to the resource Despatch, NY, Rochester's Great Industrial Suburb Description An account of the resource According to the East Rochester <a href="http://www.erhistory.com/history.php">Local History Office</a>, the planned town of Despatch originally was named as such due to its proximity to railroad lines and a transportation company. Its land rights were purchased by entrepreneur Walter Parce between 1893-96 via his Vanderbilt Improvement Company.<br /><br />The promotional map here probably dates to this period or shortly thereafter, with Parce a likely organizer. Selected factories like the Signal Manufacturing Co. and the Buchanan Brass Hardware and Rolling Mill are featured; at the same time the village's "Pure Water. Pure Air. Sanitary Sewers. Healthful Homes" are extolled. Even more than most bird's eye views, this one is aspirational in that many of its blocks consist of numbered lots, with the promise of "Fine Business and Residence Lots on Easy Payments." The yards of those railroads are depicted at the far left and right of the panorama; between them, the town of nearly 5,000 (in 1880) shows manufacturing along the river, retail and residential streets, then highest up the hill a few remaining farms and forest. Also typical of the genre are the sixteen individual portraits bordering the bird's eye view--probably drawn for an additional charge or the promise of buying copies of the lithograph in bulk.
