Friend Family Moving Into Housing at Nesbitt Farm, Albion NY
Description
An account of the resource
Labor shortages on Western New York farms during World War II led to various programs for making up the shortfall: the "Farm Cadets" youth program; calls for community volunteers; guest workers from Jamaica and the Bahamas; and prisoner of war labor.

The photograph here is one in a series documenting how an Albion, NY farmer named David Nesbitt contracted through the US Employment Service to transport a family from Richmond, WV. Bryant Friend--along with his father, wife Hazel, and daughter--are shown entering a formerly abandoned house on the Nesbitt farm. On another photograph in the series, it is noted that "So urgent was the need for immediate farm labor that even before the Friends moved in, they were working in the fields of David Nesbitt."

A name given to the resource
Apple Bin at H.J. Heinz Plant, Medina
Description
An account of the resource
The agricultural region of Orleans county supported several large food processing plants, among them the Olney Canning Company in Albion, NY and the H. J. Heinz factory in Medina, NY. The latter was built in 1899 as the seventh branch factory of Heinz, for the purpose of making vinegar. Here we see in a photograph from 1908 indicating the scale of production that was implied. Bulk apples that were considered "seconds" either were processed for sauce or, more likely in Medina, vinegar.

During World War II the Heinz plant was considered an important processor to support US troops--it produced a meat-and-stew ration--and as such was allocated labor via several means. Some hands came from Jamaica or the Bahamas through a guest worker program; others were Italian or German prisoners of war. Even so, there were constant emergency appeals during the harvest season, often depending upon women to work in the factory or for school to be delayed a week so as to complete the tomato harvest.

Perry Knitting Co.
Description
An account of the resource
This collection gathers documents for a Perry Knitting Co. exhibit on OpenValley. They are drawn from from three main sources.

First, the Clark Rice Photography Collection at the Perry, NY Public Library. Rice was a prolific photographer in Western New York throughout the mid-20th century. This collection includes scans of his work, and copies of images from the turn of the century photographer Merrium Crocker, whose studio Rice purchased.

Secondly, the Henry Page Local History Files. Page was president of First National Bank of Perry, and a local historian associated with the public library for nearly five decades. His uncle, William, had helped secure funding from the Carnegie Corporation for its establishment in 1900 and construction in 1914. The Page collection contains various historical materials and photographs accumulated by him over the years.

Thirdly, we draw upon various public domain texts, such as maps from the Library of Congress or digitized articles from local newspapers. All images here are selections from these collections, chosen for their relevance to OpenValley project. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the Perry Public Library and its Director, Jessica Pacciotti.

Perry Knitting Co. Draft Deferment Requests, 1942
Description
An account of the resource
In 1940, the Selective Service and Training Act provided for America's first peacetime draft registration, applicable to all men ages 16 to 64. Initially it was to be for a period of twelve months, but after the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941 eligibility was extended indefinitely in early 1942.

Against this backdrop the Perry Knitting Co. requested an exemption for its employees on the grounds that its product was essential for military operations. We have here a tissue-paper copy of a letter sent to Local Board #571 as "Affidavits to Support Claims for Occupational Deferment" pertaining to the company's employees. These men are listed by their draft number although not, as in a similar 1917 appeal, according to their PKC department.

The fragile paper has numerous tears that have been retouched for the purpose of display; the first two pages are printed back-to-back and show evidence of shadow bleed-through.

George M. Traber on Women Cutters
Description
An account of the resource
Letter to Local Board #571 of the Selective Service System shows the President of Perry Knitting Co. attempting to secure as many deferments for his (male) employees as possible. In this case, he argues that women in the Cutting Room lack the strength to handle a full 40 lb. batch in a single cut, and the resulting half-batches slow down production 50%. Traber also argues there is not enough room to locate the additional workers to compensate. Not a Rosie the Riveter moment.
Although this document is not dated, its typewriter style and contemporary newspaper accounts suggest it was composed during World War II.

Description
An account of the resource
Richard Gaige grew up in Binghamton, NY, studied art at Syracuse University, then moved to New York City to pursue an career. Among other things he painted for the Federal Art Project; two of his works are at the New Deal Gallery. A year after enlisting in 1942 Gaige published Me and the Army, a collection of sketches whose faceless but sympathetically rendered soldiers resonated with the shared experience of enlisted men. It's likely he was invited to create this collection of illustrations based upon his earlier work.

In Donald G. Taggart's history of the Third Infantry Division, an illustration appears immediately after the title page for each chapter.
