The Genesee Farmer shared this design from an Ontario County resident for one "that can be made by any farmer with the aid of a blacksmith." It relied upon incremental prying, but that farmer claimed that "I have séen two hands, on a lot that had been cleared fourteen years, pull in a day from sixty to a hundred stumps, mostly from ten to eighteen inches in diameter." It possesses great power and may be worked with ease and convenience." Perhaps over-optimistically, it was claimed that for a team of horses and three men "removal of 100 stumps is considered a day's work." By the mid-1800s, most land clearing involved the use of animal power, like oxen or horses. Later, explosives were used to destroy stumps.
