An account of the resource
This is a hybrid map typical of its time. It embeds cartography--including street names, property and water rights ownership, sewage lines and fire hydrants--within an advertising framework. Taken altogether it provides a useful snapshot of the Perry business community at the turn of the century.

Note: this item consists of smaller and larger jpeg files, along with an animated gif that was created for the purpose of an exhibit page on "The Living Mill."

Description
An account of the resource
This collection gathers documents for a Perry Knitting Co. exhibit on OpenValley. They are drawn from from three main sources.

First, the Clark Rice Photography Collection at the Perry, NY Public Library. Rice was a prolific photographer in Western New York throughout the mid-20th century. This collection includes scans of his work, and copies of images from the turn of the century photographer Merrium Crocker, whose studio Rice purchased.

Secondly, the Henry Page Local History Files. Page was president of First National Bank of Perry, and a local historian associated with the public library for nearly five decades. His uncle, William, had helped secure funding from the Carnegie Corporation for its establishment in 1900 and construction in 1914. The Page collection contains various historical materials and photographs accumulated by him over the years.

Thirdly, we draw upon various public domain texts, such as maps from the Library of Congress or digitized articles from local newspapers. All images here are selections from these collections, chosen for their relevance to OpenValley project. Description
An account of the resource
This photograph dates to a time after construction of Mill #3 and its smokestack (which is visible at the right side of photograph). From across the Silver Lake Outlet we see Mill #1 and the smaller Mill #2 that was added on. In its distinctive way, the image reminds us that the Perry Knitting Company was constructed in a rural location.

Grand Opening of the Perry Bowling Center
Description
An account of the resource
This advertisement announces the opening of an unusual recreation venue. Beginning with its construction in 1917, a Ford dealership and garage had been located on Covington St., but by the late 1930s was planning to locate.

In 1940 the Perry Rotary Club proposed to purchase the property and "make the hall the recreational center of Perry youth, giving them clean and wholesome atmosphere under capable supervision" (Perry Herald 6 Nov. 1940: 1). In December of that year the Perry Bowling Center announced its grand opening, with residents invited to "inspect the modern appointments of Western New York's newest recreation hall" (Perry Herald 18 Dec. 1940: 2). It remains in operation today.

Global Material Flows for Clothing, 2015
Description
An account of the resource
This graphic illustrates the product life cycle of the global clothing economy. It appears in a report created for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, A New Textiles Economy: Redesigning Fashion's Future. Among the report's important points: virtually no recycled materials are used in the manufacture of clothing; two-thirds of that virgin material is some form of plastic; and that about 85% of all clothing materials are wasted during production, end up in landfills, or are incinerated.

This item consists of two image files, both the annotated original and one cleaned up for display purposes.

Nitey Nite Lullabies
Description
An account of the resource
Cover of a promotional 78 rpm record, created for the Perry Knitting Company's "Nitey Nite" line of children's sleepwear, features a photograph similar to its print advertising of the time. In the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle a local department store offered the album free with the purchase of two or more sleepers (15 April 1954: 4).

"The exquisite timelessness of these songs," reads a portion of the back cover, "the warmth and tenderness of the Choir, these blend in a memorable performance of four of the western world's most beloved lullabies."

The Norman Luboff Choir was a popular creator of easy listening choral music during the 1950s-70s. Featured on this album are Arthur Gleghorn on flute and May Cambern on harp. Below are the four songs listed, including hyperlinks to digitized sound files courtesy of the Kahle/Austin Foundation and the Internet Archive.

Side 1: All Through the Night / Sleep, Baby, Sleep
Side 2: Cradle Song / Brahms' Lullaby

We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the Perry Public Library and its Director, Jessica Pacciotti.

Perry Knitting Co. Outlet Store
Description
An account of the resource
For many years, the Perry Knitting Co. had operated an informal store in Mill #1 that sold factory seconds at reduced prices. The 1950s saw creation of the company's own Nitey Nite brand sleepwear, and direct marketing of its products. A separate building on North Center St. was constructed as a factory outlet. In the window we can see mannequins and dolls attired in Nitey Nites. Today the structure is still standing; it houses Sweet Sarah's bakery.
