Description
An account of the resource
This collection of more than 200 paintings owes its existence to two primary causes: allocations from the Federal Art Project to a New York state tuberculosis sanatorium located at Mt. Morris--the landscapes and still lifes were thought to be restful--and to the committed volunteers who helped preserve the paintings after the hospital closed. For several decades the canvases were stored in non-climate-controlled basements; it appears that doctors and staff removed at least three dozen works as "keepsakes."

Despite the seeming tranquility of the paintings, they were created by artists primarily from New York City whose background was more political and aesthetically adventurous than this rural location would indicate. Follow this hyperlink to a short introduction to the New Deal Gallery collection. We're grateful to the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts for access to their collection, which has been re-photographed and appears here at two resolutions: a cropped, web-friendly file size of around 1 MB; and a high-resolution file including the painting's frame.

Items in this collection were created according to a consistent format: a short description of each painting in formal terms, followed by a biography of each artist. Where possible we have supplied hyperlinks relevant to their lives and to other examples of their art. An account of the resource
A simple still life (perhaps deceptively so) includes as its ostensible objects a Grecian vase, flowers, and red grapes. Whether intentional or not, each element evokes a somewhat different artistic tradition: classical sculpture, informal nature in the form of daisies and zinnias, and European still life as represented by grapes. The entire arrangement sits upon a reflective surface.

About the Artist:We haven’t located any reliable information about this artist. Description
An account of the resource
Motoichi "Roy" Kadowaki was a Japanese-American artist; four of his paintings are at the New Deal Gallery, Mt. Morris. What we know of him is that his vocation always had to be supported by a variety of service jobs deemed appropriate for Japanese in the early 20th century: cook, waiter, servant. Aside from his extant paintings there are glimpses of a creative, even whimsical vision. This drawing dates to 1926, when Kadowaki filed a patent for "Lighting Apparatus" using a presumably translucent celluloid cockatoo.
The description for Patent Application #1,616,579 reads: "In lighting apparatus, the combination of an electric lamp socket support and a lamp enclosing member consisting of a hollow translucent celluloid body of elongated form having a slit adjacent to one end and a hole communicating with said slit for engaging said socket support, and a weight positioned inside one end of said body."

Description
An account of the resource
Abernathy (1873-1956) was a landscape painter whose work is located at the New Deal Gallery, Mt. Morris. In order to support herself, she also was an art instructor at various colleges: Belmont College (TN), Stanford Female College (KY), Columbia Female Institute (TN), the University of Arkansas. Here, she is shown in the 1910 yearbook of the Florida State College for Women, in Tallahassee. She was a dedicated teacher; five years earlier, when a fire broke out Abernathy guided her students to safety rather than saving her own art and equipment; the Florida legislature passed a special bill to help compensate her loss.

Photographs of Joseph Biel and Lena Gurr
Description
An account of the resource
Joseph Biel (1891-1943) was a Jewish immigrant who had witness the pogroms of Bialystock, Russia; Lena Gurr (1897-1992), born in New York, was the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants. Both were painters committed to social justice who appear to have supported each other wonderfully, including co-exhibition of their art at places like the Brooklyn Museum and enjoying Biel's inclusion at a 1939 World's Fair exposition.
Biel's painting "After the Storm," created as part of the Federal Art Project, is part of the New Deal Gallery's collection at Mt. Morris, NY. These three photos from Gurr's photo album are included here to help suggest their modern, reciprocal relationship.
