Title A name given to the resource New York: The Empire State Description An account of the resource Advertising map created by the Mentholatum Company promises the "romantic epochs of of New York history paraded before us in picturesque array." Although its text narrative and dates address the state's history, there also are many features of the tourist or "romance" map genre: figures in stylized period costume; winter activities in the Adirondacks; the Empire State Building located wherever it will fit; several sites of business and industry, including a Mentholatum factory located in Buffalo, NY. The map also is interesting for its division of the state into four cultural "influences" indicated by color: French, English, Dutch, and Neutral. The Adirondack Mountains resemble a leaf in fall color. Title A name given to the resource Romance Map of the North Country Description An account of the resource Centered upon an area roughly bordered by the Adirondack State Park, this map synthesizes basic topographical features—borders, lakes and waterways, cities, early roads—with pictorial elements. Some of these latter reference historical events; still, there are many other elements of the "romance." Upstate New York is shown to be wealthy in natural resources (especially minerals) and having a valued neighbor to the north. Along the left margin there is an implied Manifest Destiny narrative against which indigenous history may be considered. "With motor travel again unlimited," we are told, "New York's 59,000 miles of improved highways beckon the autoist to enjoy the State's attractions from the vantage-point of his own conveyance." Clearly, the automotive age has begun in earnest. The state is divided into fifteen regional "Vacationlands," including the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes. There are thematic sections highlighting activities for seemingly any taste: Fishing, Swimming, Hiking, Camping, Motoring, Historic Shrines... even Flowers and Geology make an appearance. It's an intriguing glimpse into the early trajectory of postwar tourism, which still is relatively outdoors-centered in its emphasis.
