As the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT explains: "European Cabinets of Art and Curiosity were places of universal learning in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries....They were the museums of their time, offering visitors first-hand knowledge of the far-away world through objects they could see with their own eyes, and touch with their own hands."

In 2015 the museum opened their own Cabinet from various materials that had been collected during the 20th century, in particular objects donated by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1917. It took an additional step by creating a virtual rendering of the Cabinet that can be viewed online. This screenshot shows an overview map of that synthetic space, which can be viewed by following this link.

It is of interest to OpenValley due to questions about the underlying logic of musuem and gallery spatial tours, which are addressed in the story map African Past: Migrant Future.

In his 1782 collection of essays, Letters from an American Farmer, Hector St. John de Crèvecœur described the Cape Cod region as a kind of microcosm of social transformations occurring in North America. "What has happened here has and will happen everywhere else," he wrote; given "the full rewards of their industry" farmers were like an undammed stream "spreading plenty and cheerfulness" across the continent. Crèvecœur included this map as a visual aid to his argument. He tell us it was created by James Tupper, "son of the sheriff of the island." What follows is a tour of Nantucket accompanied by glowing descriptions of a new world created by small yeoman farmers. var str = 'Map shows a somewhat idealized pattern of migrant farm labor on the east coast during the mid-twentieth century. As many as an estimated 58,000 workers in 1949 followed harvests northward. They were primarily Black, and worked in \"areas of intensive vegetable and fruit production with high labor requirements\" (4). In New York state, those crops usually were potatoes and apples. Seasonal migration declined along with the number of farms and a tendency for workers to remain year-round in a particular location.';

This is a hybrid map typical of its time. It embeds cartography--including street names, property and water rights ownership, sewage lines and fire hydrants--within an advertising framework. Taken altogether it provides a useful snapshot of the Perry business community at the turn of the century.

Note: this item consists of smaller and larger jpeg files, along with an animated gif that was created for the purpose of an exhibit page on "The Living Mill."

Sanborn Map Company created extremely detailed renderings (1:600 scale) for the purposes of fire insurance underwriters. Important details like building use, construction materials, water supplies, power plant, sprinkler systems, and more enabled accurate assessment of fire risk. They remain valuable tools for historical research because they were updated frequently. For the PKC, we have maps from the years 1884, 1894, 1906, and 1913. Taken together, they document a period of growth for the company.

In this cropped image, we see that a building boom has continued for PKC during the six years since the 1894 map. What came to be known as Mill #2 has been built on to Mill #1, with the functions of knitting and finishing (a different map gives its construction date as 1893). There are now electric, not gas, lights in the factory. Across Water St. are new buildings for storage and for manufacturing paper boxes, presumably for shipping its products. What will become Mill #3 is in the process of construction, with its own power plant. And the company has added an Office to coordinate its growing operations. Three "fly-over" passageways connect various buildings.

For the PKC, we have maps from the years 1884, 1900, 1906, and 1913. Taken together, they document a period of growth for the company.

In this cropped image, we see that since 1884 the mill has constructed a separate wash house and picker house to process incoming cotton. We learn that the coal power plant has doubled from 40 to 80hp. The company states that "85 hands" are employed at the mill." Now its six floors are organized like this:

Sorting

Knitting

Finishing & Seaming

Carding

Spinning

Drying & Brushing

Perhaps most crucially, the map reveals that PKC has installed "Grinnell Sprinklers," generally considered the first effective automatic system. Downstream the Cataract Custom Mill, operated by J.B. Hutton, continues operation and states that for fire insurance purposes "protection can be had from knitting mill."

Taken together, they document a period of growth for the company.

In this cropped image, we see continued indications that PKC is growing into a much larger firm and requiring additional storage space to stockpile fuel, supplies, and finished products prior to shipment. Mill #3 has been completed, but already a yarn mill expansion is under construction. What comes to be known as Mill #4 is constructed of brick (perhaps due to insurance considerations) and is making paper boxes. Now we're up to six "fly-over" passageways connecting the manufacturing site.
