Description An account of the resource This collection gathers documents for a Perry Knitting Co. exhibit on OpenValley. They are drawn from from three main sources. First, the Clark Rice Photography Collection at the Perry, NY Public Library. Rice was a prolific photographer in Western New York throughout the mid-20th century. This collection includes scans of his work, and copies of images from the turn of the century photographer Merrium Crocker, whose studio Rice purchased. Secondly, the Henry Page Local History Files. Page was president of First National Bank of Perry, and a local historian associated with the public library for nearly five decades. His uncle, William, had helped secure funding from the Carnegie Corporation for its establishment in 1900 and construction in 1914. The Page collection contains various historical materials and photographs accumulated by him over the years. Thirdly, we draw upon various public domain texts, such as maps from the Library of Congress or <a href="http://perrypubliclibrary.advantage-preservation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">digitized articles from local newspapers</a>. All images here are selections from these collections, chosen for their relevance to OpenValley project. Title A name given to the resource Mannequins on a Carousel Description An account of the resource An open house held at the Perry Knitting Co. in May 1953 sought to balance a demonstration of the plant's manufacturing, an appeal to possible employees, and a promotion of PKC's main product: Nitey Nite sleepwear. Here we see mannequins attired in the pajamas on a miniature carousel; dolls for sale appear to intrigue a young visitor. The Rice Collection annotation reads: "A carousel set up to demonstrate the Nitey Nite products, along with the dolls that were sold. I think the dolls were $2.98." Title A name given to the resource Perry Knitting Co. Window Display, Main Street Description An account of the resource This photograph, taken by Clark Rice, is a bit surreal. It shows a display created for windows of the Rockwell-Perry department store, located at the corner of Main St. and Borden Ave. The theme was <a href="https://openvalley.org/items/show/1542" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Nitey Nite Songbirds"</a> and was promoted in the Perry Herald for the week of October 29 - November 4, 1951. We behold six mannequins dressed in Nitey Nite pajamas, along with a number of smaller dolls similarly attired. Artificial palm trees and birds in cages complete the array--behind a set of bars representing a zoo. In the foreground are two live flamingos. The birds correspond to pajama colors: flamingo pink, canary yellow, parakeet and hummingbird green, bluebird blue, and robin red.
