The first love of L[ouis] M. Place (ca. 1859-1896) seems to have been horses--as of 1881, he was entered in the so-called "butcher's races" at the Avon Driving Park race track. In 1890 he was seriously injured by horses and suffered poor health in the years following. He married Clara Laidlaw in 1891.';
