Green Empire Farms
Description
An account of the resource
Green Empire Farms is a massive, 64-acre Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) operation in Oneida, NY. It is owned by the Mastronardi Produce company, a Canadian firm that also purchased three Intergrow Greenhouse locations in 2023. This location opened in August of 2019. Less than a year later it became notorious for a COVID outbreak, which revealed that hired migrant workers were not wearing masks and sleeping four to a room in local motels. At least 179 out of 300 Green Empire Farms tested positive. <br /><br />This black and white satellite photo was created for an ArcGIS story map titled <a href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/9f892f35bee24c17b2a65316116cee13" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Scorching Existence"</a>

An account of the resource
As of 2021, Intergrow Greenhouses operated at three locations in Western New York: Fillmore, Albion, and Ontario. Together, they constitute nearly 105 acres of hydroponic production, or more than 4.5 million square feet. According to the trade publication <em>Greenhouse</em> <em>Grower</em>, this made them the fifth-largest US company in terms of total acreage (Wright). Description
An account of the resource
The 15-acre Intergrow facility was constructed in 1998 to grow vegetables year-round on the model of Dutch greenhouses, soon focusing upon tomatoes as its most commercially viable crop. The operation was sited in Fillmore, NY for its proximity to the coal-fired Allegany Power Plant. and employed primarily Spanish-speaking migrant workers. <br /><br />The Geneseo Migrant Center (GMC) began outreach to Intergrow workers by 2001 and soon recognized that their agricultural "world" was in some ways quite different from field workers at traditional farms. In order for staff and artists to better communicate, GMC Director Sylvia Kelly visited the Intergrow greenhouse and learned some of its distinct vocabulary: "pallet jacks" (gato de paleta) and "string line" (cuerda de linea). <a href="https://openvalley.org/items/show/1899" target="_blank" rel="noopener">See her notes here.</a><br /><br />The photographs shown above were taken to create flashcards corresponding to some of Intergrow's daily work:<br />
