In 1968 she founded the Geneseo Migrant Center, which evolved into not only a school for children but for adults, and preschoolers as well. The needs of migrants and especially migrant children have been long overlooked, and in Western New York wasn't until Dr. Mattera recognized them that things started evolving. The Geneseo Migrant Center was started in 1965 by Dr. Mattera, then a professor in SUNY Geneseo's School of Education, after being approached by division director, Dr. William Cotton, with an idea for a project to serve the migrant farmworkers. In the following decades the center eventually gained national recognition for its various programs, including an art programs known as CAMPS.
