Remnants of Senecas land are visible as the Cattaraugus Reservation (at upper left) and the Allegheney Reservation (alongside the river). Although the county's population still was sparse we see townships laid out already on Burr's map--particularly surrounding Olean, whose location on the Allegheney River made it a desirable trading post. Along with existing villages, county roads, and water features (the legend mentions stage roads, mills, forges, and churches, but none appear on the map). This item consists of Burr's county map and a cropped version focusing upon the Allegheney River, the latter used for the <a href="https://openvalley.org/exhibits/show/watersheds">Watersheds</a> exhibit. Near this location are the headwaters of three major rivers: the Genesee, the Allegheny, and the Susquehanna. Or put another way, water from here flows to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Gulf of Mexico, and Chesapeake Bay. The image on this postcard in all likelihood was created first as a panoramic map, wholly or partially funded by citizens wanting to advertise the community as a commercial destination. In the years since, however, population has remained sparse and Ulysses is better known for its white supremicist activities.
