Potter's Field (Hart Island) Burial Record
Description
An account of the resource
After a variety of uses, this small island in Long Island Sound first was used as a mass cemetery following the Civil War. It quickly became a burial ground for New York's indigent, then its uses expanded rapidly: a quarantine area during times of pandemic, a psychiatric hospital, a boy's workhouse, a prison...anyone the troubled the city with their visibility. <br /><br />This image is in OpenValley to show a single page from the records of its mass burials, here covering the months of July-December 1935. In its columns listing cause of death, several show the initials "TB"--that is, tuberculosis. Hart's Island had a tubercularium dating to the 1880s, and it also interred people who had died of the disease in other hospitals.<br /><br />The Federal Art Project lithographer David Burke situated one of his works at Hart Island: <em><a href="https://openvalley.org/items/show/2159" target="_blank" rel="noopener">He Calleth His Own By Name--Potter's Fields</a> </em>(1935-42).

Public health poster created by Chicago's Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium depicts that disease as a collective responsibility: it depended upon everyone get a TB test. In colors leaning heavily toward the American flag, and eight children goose-stepping, it's not an exaggeration to conceive this as the moral equivalent of war.

Article gives praise to 15-year-old Luella Smith, the youngest daughter of a Greene County, WI farmer. She's recognized for her dedication to the local 4-H Club, but even moreso her industry and resourcefulness. Quoting from her statement, the magazine goes on to describe the many household items she has fashioned from used flour sacks: dresses, dresser scarfs, table cloths. She recalls joining a group called "The Merry Sewers," praising their approach to household thrifitness: "I like the name as it shows we do not think of sewing as drudgery but rather as a pleasure."<br /><br />The article on Smith is equally interesting for its accidental juxtaposition of male- and female-coded farm labor. Luella contributes to the household economy not only through her skills but an attitude described by her club's advisor: "She is such a modest little girl that one cannot help liking her. Her good work crops out not only in her projects but in everything she does." One historical challenge is seeing Luella's tools and skills on par with the advertisement adjacent.

Five Arch Bridge With Interurban Train

Beginning in roughly the 1900s, electric interurban rail lines became popular across the US. Their lower profile--in terms of size, weight and emissions--made them ideal for commuters traveling to cities. The Erie Railroad joined this trend by adding service along an existing line between Mt. Morris and Rochester. <br /><br />The postcard view here shows one such journey across the town of Avon's five-arch bridge during the 1920s. Service stops included Mt. Morris, Cuylerville, Geneseo, Ashantee, Avon, West Rush, West Henrietta, Mortimer, and Rochester. Initially, 24 trains ran daily; by 1931, however, that number had been cut in half, and in 1941 all passenger service was terminated as automobiles supplanted interurban rail service.
