It shows a display created for windows of the Rockwell-Perry department store, located at the corner of Main St. and Borden Ave. The theme was <a href="https://openvalley.org/items/show/1542" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Nitey Nite Songbirds"</a> and was promoted in the Perry Herald for the week of October 29 - November 4, 1951. We behold six mannequins dressed in Nitey Nite pajamas, along with a number of smaller dolls similarly attired. Artificial palm trees and birds in cages complete the array--behind a set of bars representing a zoo. In the foreground are two live flamingos. The birds correspond to pajama colors: flamingo pink, canary yellow, parakeet and hummingbird green, bluebird blue, and robin red. The children are energetic, with several of them seemingly unable to sit still. The lively group is separated by rows of seats, which adds containment to the otherwise hectic scene. The blobs of ink that make up the seats reinforce the theatre setting by making the room appear dark while the audience members are illuminated by the lights on stage. Title A name given to the resource New Deal Gallery Description An account of the resource This collection of more than 200 paintings owes its existence to two primary causes: allocations from the Federal Art Project to a New York state tuberculosis sanatorium located at Mt. Morris--the landscapes and still lifes were thought to be restful--and to the committed volunteers who helped preserve the paintings after the hospital closed. For several decades the canvases were stored in non-climate-controlled basements; it appears that doctors and staff removed at least three dozen works as "keepsakes." Despite the seeming tranquility of the paintings, they were created by artists primarily from New York City whose background was more political and aesthetically adventurous than this rural location would indicate. <a href="https://openvalley.org/exhibits/show/green-new-deal/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Follow this hyperlink to a short introduction to the New Deal Gallery collection</a>. Title A name given to the resource Romance Map of the North Country Description An account of the resource Centered upon an area roughly bordered by the Adirondack State Park, this map synthesizes basic topographical features—borders, lakes and waterways, cities, early roads—with pictorial elements. Some of these latter reference historical events; still, there are many other elements of the "romance." Upstate New York is shown to be wealthy in natural resources (especially minerals) and having a valued neighbor to the north. Along the left margin there is an implied Manifest Destiny narrative against which indigenous history may be considered. This form of map was very popular during the 1930s, and several others of New York state are available in OpenValley by searching the tag "Romance Map."
