Description An account of the resource This collection gathers documents for a Perry Knitting Co. exhibit on OpenValley. They are drawn from from three main sources. First, the Clark Rice Photography Collection at the Perry, NY Public Library. Rice was a prolific photographer in Western New York throughout the mid-20th century. This collection includes scans of his work, and copies of images from the turn of the century photographer Merrium Crocker, whose studio Rice purchased. Secondly, the Henry Page Local History Files. Page was president of First National Bank of Perry, and a local historian associated with the public library for nearly five decades. His uncle, William, had helped secure funding from the Carnegie Corporation for its establishment in 1900 and construction in 1914. The Page collection contains various historical materials and photographs accumulated by him over the years. Thirdly, we draw upon various public domain texts, such as maps from the Library of Congress or <a href="http://perrypubliclibrary.advantage-preservation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">digitized articles from local newspapers</a>. All images here are selections from these collections, chosen for their relevance to OpenValley project. Also noted on the map are rail lines connecting the many manufacturing sites. What becomes clear is how widely distributed the production of clothing was only a century ago. For example, two different routes west of the Genesee River are shown; however, the surveyors seem to be strongly suggesting that the Southern route is too hilly via their elevation renderings. Also, the city of Rochester doesn't appear on the map, showing how its High Falls (and their waterpower) were both a desirable factor but also not really valuable without a means to transport milled products. Description An account of the resource In 1853 after extensive study, the New York City Common Council approved a site surrounding the Croton Reservoir for a Manhattan park. Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and designer Calvert Vaux were winners of a design competition, and in 1857 work began upon the original 778-acre site (it would grow to 843 acres). This rare map was disseminated only through park's Board of Commissioners annual report, and to key players in the construction process--in this case, board member Andrew Haswell Green. It shows that almost all early work was concentrated upon the park's southern portion, and the extent to which its "natural" appearance was constructed. Significant rock outcroppings that remained from the Lawrentide Ice Sheet are marked by Olmsted--a fundamental driver of his design. Central Park was officially completed in 1876. Remnants of Senecas land are visible as the Cattaraugus Reservation (at upper left) and the Allegheney Reservation (alongside the river). Although the county's population still was sparse we see townships laid out already on Burr's map--particularly surrounding Olean, whose location on the Allegheney River made it a desirable trading post. Along with existing villages, county roads, and water features (the legend mentions stage roads, mills, forges, and churches, but none appear on the map). This item consists of Burr's county map and a cropped version focusing upon the Allegheney River, the latter used for the <a href="https://openvalley.org/exhibits/show/watersheds">Watersheds</a> exhibit. Title A name given to the resource Map of the Island of Nantucket Description An account of the resource In his 1782 collection of essays, Letters from an American Farmer, Hector St. John de Crèvecœur described the Cape Cod region as a kind of microcosm of social transformations occurring in North America. "What has happened here has and will happen everywhere else," he wrote; given "the full rewards of their industry" farmers were like an undammed stream "spreading plenty and cheerfulness" across the continent. Crèvecœur included this map as a visual aid to his argument. He tell us it was created by James Tupper, "son of the sheriff of the island." What follows is a tour of Nantucket accompanied by glowing descriptions of a new world created by small yeoman farmers. Note: image has been lightly color corrected for better visability.
