This is one of several paintings Johnson made of Lack George, which was a popular subject due to its spectacular setting, constantly changing weather, and relative ease of access. He had learned during the Civil War that souvenir prints of popular generals sold well, and turned to this "album card" format during the 1870s. Twelve Adirondack Sketches was one such series of 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 cards, sold for perhaps 50 cents. Jackson's surveys amidst the French and Indian Wars, when England and its rival France were battling for territorial control of North America; the second date, of course, locates publication of the map during the American Revolution. The Champlain Valley and its waterways were a critical transportation route, and accurate knowledge of its terrain and strategic points was important military intelligence. Much of that is encoded literally on the terrain here. This map was one of six in a small hand atlas designed for British officers and as such was dubbed the "Holster Atlas" for its use in the field.
