Description An account of the resource This collection gathers documents for a Perry Knitting Co. exhibit on OpenValley. They are drawn from from three main sources. First, the Clark Rice Photography Collection at the Perry, NY Public Library. Rice was a prolific photographer in Western New York throughout the mid-20th century. This collection includes scans of his work, and copies of images from the turn of the century photographer Merrium Crocker, whose studio Rice purchased. Secondly, the Henry Page Local History Files. Page was president of First National Bank of Perry, and a local historian associated with the public library for nearly five decades. His uncle, William, had helped secure funding from the Carnegie Corporation for its establishment in 1900 and construction in 1914. The Page collection contains various historical materials and photographs accumulated by him over the years. Thirdly, we draw upon various public domain texts, such as maps from the Library of Congress or <a href="http://perrypubliclibrary.advantage-preservation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">digitized articles from local newspapers</a>. All images here are selections from these collections, chosen for their relevance to OpenValley project. Title A name given to the resource Junk Yard on East 29th St. Description An account of the resource Nearby to many of New York's factories, power plants, and slaughterhouses, there's an obvious social ecology to Myers' choice of location. It's possible that the photographic of this painting may have mis-titled it, given frequent references to a Junk Shop. About the Artist: Born in Petersburg, VA, and traveling to New York City at age eighteen, Myers knew poverty at first hand. He took art classes when he was able at the Art Students League and Cooper Union, but was largely self-taught and perhaps motivated more by a desire to render the city honestly—an aesthetic that had much in common with the so-called “Ashcan School” of American realism of the early twentieth century. But Myers’ own familiarity with the working class, wrote Harry Wickey, meant that his subject matter “was approached from the standpoint neither of the artist, tourist, or one who was out to expose the conditions under which these people lived. He sought out the life these quarters had to offer and it transformed itself into a thing of beauty as it passed through him” (<a href="https://archive.org/stream/jeromemyersmemor00whit#page/n1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jerome Myers Memorial Exhibition 3</a>). Title A name given to the resource Kief's Diner Description An account of the resource Small lunch car run by Otto Kiefer was located on the Park Square in Avon, NY, perhaps as early as 1926. Born in Cohocton and raised in Wayland, Kiefer moved to Silver Creek, NY as the manager of an electric company. It was here that he probably learned about the Ward & Dickinson Co., which manufactured more than 300 dining cars between 1921 and 1949. Kiefer bought Car #41 in 1926 for a cost of $5,850 (about $80,000 in 2016) and offered an all-night menu, presumably for working residents and passengers traveling through on the Erie Railway. After Kiefer's sudden death in 1941 the business passed through a series of owners until it was moved to 25 Borden Ave. in Perry in 1946. The diner finally was dismantled in 1957. After Kiefer's death in 1940 it passed through a number of owners before being moved to Perry in 1946. It was disassembled in 1957. This only accelerated during the Great Famine (1845-52) and afterwards. Frederick Opper was the child of Austrian immigrants who satirical cartoons appeared in Frank Leslie's Magazine, and later the influential spin-off Puck Magazine--where this image appeared. It references several widespread, racist stereotypes of the Irish: their simian appearance, purportedly due to genetic connections to Africans); their lazinesss; and their lack of pride in the domestic arts. Here, the "King" holds forth while his castle remains in ruins.
