Title A name given to the resource Perry Knitting Co., Castile Branch Description An account of the resource Two men stand in front of a building that began operations in 1916 and, as of 1918, was producing 500 dozen garments every week. (Perry Herald 22 April 1936: 7; Perry Herald 23 March 1938: 7). The Knitting Co. had difficulties in attracting workers to Perry, and often had a standing advertisement for "Girls" in various newspapers. Local transportation was ineffective. Thus, by opening a factory in Castile (and later in Mt. Morris) the employment came to workers. As a branch factory the Castile plant was susceptible to reduced hours (1924) or closings during economic slowdowns (1920). It's not clear whether the photograph's iris effect was intentional. Description An account of the resource The Rice Collection annotation reads: "Print taken about 1900 of the Perry Knitting Mill and the seamstresses sewing up the underwear made at the time." This seems plausible given some of the photograph's details. There is no overhead electrical lighting, and power for the machines appears to be supplied by a series of belts. We see women in shirtwaist blouses, and male supervisors in coats or vests with bow ties. One man sports a boater hat. Taken as a whole, this clearly formal photograph is meant to convey a well-run factory of the day: employees on tasks and managers ensuring orderly decorum. Still, at the left side of the image we can see a group of women laughing... presumably at the occasion of a photographer's visit. This item consists of four files: a cropped image of web-friendly size, a larger cropped image, the original framed photograph, and an image cropped specifically for an OpenValley exhibit. Mill #1 Description An account of the resource According to the Rice Collection annotation, this is "Perry Knitting Mill from an early plate, 1880." That pre-dates the operation, but it does seem as though we're looking at the original Mill #1 building at an early date, prior to construction of Mill #2 in 1893. Downstream along the Silver Lake Outlet, at the right side of the photograph, is J.B. Hutton's Custom Cataract Mill. This latter building was demolished shortly after 1900. The photograph here appears to have been lightly retouched. Also available is Rice Collection #5822, an unretouched version of the same image. Description An account of the resource This collection gathers documents for a Perry Knitting Co. exhibit on OpenValley. They are drawn from from three main sources. First, the Clark Rice Photography Collection at the Perry, NY Public Library. Rice was a prolific photographer in Western New York throughout the mid-20th century. This collection includes scans of his work, and copies of images from the turn of the century photographer Merrium Crocker, whose studio Rice purchased. Secondly, the Henry Page Local History Files. Page was president of First National Bank of Perry, and a local historian associated with the public library for nearly five decades. His uncle, William, had helped secure funding from the Carnegie Corporation for its establishment in 1900 and construction in 1914. The Page collection contains various historical materials and photographs accumulated by him over the years. Thirdly, we draw upon various public domain texts, such as maps from the Library of Congress or <a href="http://perrypubliclibrary.advantage-preservation.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">digitized articles from local newspapers</a>. All images here are selections from these collections, chosen for their relevance to OpenValley project. Bowling Team Description An account of the resource According to the Rice Collection annotation, "The Mill sponsored a bowling team and these six individuals went to the 28th Annual New York State Championship Tournament, held in Niagara Falls in 1961." Pictured from left to right are: Melanie "Mel" Lynch, Eileen MacQuarrie, Betty Dunning, Marjorie "Marge" Ostrum, Inez Brant, and Ruth "Ruthie" Palmer. All were regular participants in the Women's PK Bowling League, which pitted teams from Unit I, Unit II, the Cutter, and the Office in weekly games. Judging from their consistently high scores, this represents a sort of "Dream Team" from the PK.
