This seems unlikely, given the configuration of brick buildings, wooden buildings, and a skyway visible at lower right. A more likely guess is that we're on the corner of Elm and Water Streets looking at two buildings used for paper box making. On the first floor of the building at right was where finished products were pressed and folded prior to packing. In 1909 it was replaced by a brick building that was called Mill #5. What came to be known as Mill #2 has been built on to Mill #1, with the functions of knitting and finishing (a different map gives its construction date as 1893). There are now electric, not gas, lights in the factory. Across Water St. are new buildings for storage and for manufacturing paper boxes, presumably for shipping its products. What will become Mill #3 is in the process of construction, with its own power plant. And the company has added an Office to coordinate its growing operations. A large picker house has been attached to Mill #3. By this point Mills #1-2, the oldest buildings, seem to have been consigned to a machine shop and storage--with the exception of the Cutting Room. This map is also of interest for its hints of daily social life for its employees. There's mention of a restaurant on the Office's second floor. Draft Deferment Requests, 1942 Description An account of the resource In 1940, the Selective Service and Training Act provided for America's first peacetime draft registration, applicable to all men ages 16 to 64. Initially it was to be for a period of twelve months, but after the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941 eligibility was extended indefinitely in early 1942. Against this backdrop the Perry Knitting Co. requested an exemption for its employees on the grounds that its product was essential for military operations. We have here a tissue-paper copy of a letter sent to Local Board #571 as "Affidavits to Support Claims for Occupational Deferment" pertaining to the company's employees. These men are listed by their draft number although not, as in <a href="https://openvalley.org/items/show/1677" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a similar 1917 appeal</a>, according to their PKC department. The fragile paper has numerous tears that have been retouched for the purpose of display; the first two pages are printed back-to-back and show evidence of shadow bleed-through. It required all males aged 18 to 30 years to register for military conscription; the first registration took place on June 5. Individuals who were employed in agriculture or industrial labor essential to the war effort were granted a temporary exemption. This document lists the PKC employees, along with their draft number in most cases, for the purposes of an exemption due to the mill's production of clothing for the military. It also happens to be a very useful document for the purposes of understanding the mill's organizational structure and (male) individuals working in each section. Walkway--1978 Fire Description An account of the resource A decade after the PKC had gone out of business, the challenge of how to deal with its former property and buildings was vexing. At least a few of them were rented by tenants, but in other cases they presented imminent hazards--an iconic smokestack was taken down in 1973--and two fires of suspicious origins burned down several buildings. (The one shown here proved to be a case of arson in order to collect insurance money.) From the reverse side of the photograph: "Corner of Hope & Water.
