Description
An account of the resource
This collection gathers documents for a Perry Knitting Co. exhibit on OpenValley. They are drawn from from three main sources.

First, the Clark Rice Photography Collection at the Perry, NY Public Library. Rice was a prolific photographer in Western New York throughout the mid-20th century. This collection includes scans of his work, and copies of images from the turn of the century photographer Merrium Crocker, whose studio Rice purchased.

Secondly, the Henry Page Local History Files. Page was president of First National Bank of Perry, and a local historian associated with the public library for nearly five decades. His uncle, William, had helped secure funding from the Carnegie Corporation for its establishment in 1900 and construction in 1914. The Page collection contains various historical materials and photographs accumulated by him over the years.

Thirdly, we draw upon various public domain texts, such as maps from the Library of Congress or digitized articles from local newspapers. All images here are selections from these collections, chosen for their relevance to OpenValley project. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the Perry Public Library and its Director, Jessica Pacciotti.

Description
An account of the resource
This photograph dates to a time after construction of Mill #3 and its smokestack (which is visible at the right side of photograph). From across the Silver Lake Outlet we see Mill #1 and the smaller Mill #2 that was added on. In its distinctive way, the image reminds us that the Perry Knitting Company was constructed in a rural location.

Perry Knitting Co. Draft Deferment Requests, 1942
Description
An account of the resource
In 1940, the Selective Service and Training Act provided for America's first peacetime draft registration, applicable to all men ages 16 to 64. Initially it was to be for a period of twelve months, but after the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941 eligibility was extended indefinitely in early 1942.

Against this backdrop the Perry Knitting Co. requested an exemption for its employees on the grounds that its product was essential for military operations. We have here a tissue-paper copy of a letter sent to Local Board #571 as "Affidavits to Support Claims for Occupational Deferment" pertaining to the company's employees. These men are listed by their draft number although not, as in a similar 1917 appeal, according to their PKC department.

The fragile paper has numerous tears that have been retouched for the purpose of display; the first two pages are printed back-to-back and show evidence of shadow bleed-through.

Perry Knitting Co. Draft Deferment Requests, 1917
Description
An account of the resource
The Selective Service Act of 1917 was enacted on May 18 of that year. It required all males aged 18 to 30 years to register for military conscription; the first registration took place on June 5. Individuals who were employed in agriculture or industrial labor essential to the war effort were granted a temporary exemption. This document lists the PKC employees, along with their draft number in most cases, for the purposes of an exemption due to the mill's production of clothing for the military.
It also happens to be a very useful document for the purposes of understanding the mill's organizational structure and (male) individuals working in each section.

Perry Knitting Co. Walkway--1978 Fire
Description
An account of the resource
A decade after the PKC had gone out of business, the challenge of how to deal with its former property and buildings was vexing. At least a few of them were rented by tenants, but in other cases they presented imminent hazards--an iconic smokestack was taken down in 1973--and two fires of suspicious origins burned down several buildings. (The one shown here proved to be a case of arson in order to collect insurance money.)

From the reverse side of the photograph: "Corner of Hope & Water. The main office building of the P.K., vacated by J.N. White Designs on June 1, 1977. After fire of Jan. 27, 1978. Herald Feb. 3, 1978."

In Case of Strikes--Everyone Loses!
Description
An account of the resource
Advertisement from Perry's Chamber of Commerce warns that a strike at the Perry Knitting Co. will disrupt economic stability for the entire town. At the time of this advertisement, the CIO was successfully unionizing Elam Shoe Co. and the Quality Wood Heel Co. in Rochester, and "continued growth in number of Perry Knitting Mills workers who have signed with the plant CIO unit" (Rochester Democrat & Chronicle 4 April 1937: 21).

The company probably was alarmed at momentum in this direction, and undertook at least two tactics. One was to make visible employee support for a non-union shop, leading to a Loyalty Parade two months later. The other was to widen the scope of influence, arguing that economic disruptions--however bad they were in large cities--were "infinitely worse" in a small town like Perry. "The affect EVERY CITIZEN," warns the Chamber of Commerce. Thus, labor issues at the plant are shown to intertwine with an entire community.

An account of the resource
Letter to Local Board #571 of the Selective Service System shows the President of Perry Knitting Co. attempting to secure as many deferments for his (male) employees as possible. In this case, he argues that women in the Cutting Room lack the strength to handle a full 40 lb. batch in a single cut, and the resulting half-batches slow down production 50%. Traber also argues there is not enough room to locate the additional workers to compensate. Not a Rosie the Riveter moment.
Although this document is not dated, its typewriter style and contemporary newspaper accounts suggest it was composed during World War II.

Open House For Nitey Nite
Description
An account of the resource
Large advertisement for the Perry Knitting Co.'s open house of May 27, 1953 promises lots of information and "guided tours through 21 operating departments." In the meantime, the flyer mentions some striking statistics:

That a year's supply of cotton to produce Nitey Nites requires more than 8,000 acres of land;

That the thread used to stitch a year's production would wrap around the earth 26 times;

That a year's production of sleepers, laid end to end, would reach from Perry to Colorado;

That stacking a year's production of Nitey Nites would reach into earth's stratosphere.

Quite an impressive accomplishment, and this is even before visiting the PKC factory.
