<div class="js-view if-description description-rich-text break-word overflow-auto">
<div><span style="font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;">This GIS map was created to support the <a href="https://geneseo.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=0233b12694a346109a2a0f46f84a3858" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dansville Ever-Green map</a>, itself an experiment to recover historical knowledge for the purposes of envisioning a bioregional economy & culture. Its premise is to draw a 50-mile radius around the town of Dansville, NY and make visible under-appreciated resources. In this case, the interest concerns small-scale hydropower used to grind corn and wheat; saw, plane, and turn lumber; process apples into cider; card wool; and so on. A hyperlink to the map can be found below.<br /></span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;">The map of Dansville-area mills was created by using county-level maps from the 1850s (and, in one case, the 1860s). A list of the Western New York counties follows, with the surveyor, publisher, and year in parentheses: Allegany (Bechler/Gillette 1856); Genesee (Otley & Rea/Gillett 1854); Livingston (French/Gillette 1858); Monroe (Brown/Gillette 1858); Ontario (Beers/Dawson 1859); Steuben (Levy/Gillette 1857); Wyoming (Brown/Brown 1853); Yates (Beers/Stone & Stewart 1865). It is comprised of more than 600 individual mill sites.</span><span style="font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;">Mills were identified using map abbreviations of the time, which differentiated among saw mills (“S.M.”), grist mills (“G.M.”), along with spelled-out designations for less common operations. This map does not include steam-saw mills (“S.S.M.”), which used water from creeks to power wood-burning engines—that is, they were not hydropowered mills. The limitations of this procedure are many. Locations sometimes are approximate, due to discrepancies between 19th-century and contemporary maps concerning watercourses. The names of the mills and/or owners sometimes are identified on maps or can be inferred, but usually are not (a question mark indicates a plausible guess). And there are doubtless many milling operations that never made it onto these maps from the 1850s.</span><span style="font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;">From a contemporary standpoint an important caveat is that milling operations are not inevitably sustainable, and that many (or most) of the 19th-century mills created water pollution and disrupted stream communities. A sawmill meant that nearby forests were being logged, usually in an unsustainable manner. Still, it is hoped that this information will be of historical interest and, more importantly, to suggest that resources exist for a post-carbon economy in Western New York.</span></div>

Sometime the operation was called \"Light\'s Mill,\" as on this image.
Ownership of the mill passed to sons John and William, then to his granddaughter Lucy (Light) McDonald who in 1949 leased it to a Dutch miller named George A. Bass. In 1951, the town of Avon purchased the mill for its more valuable Conesus Lake water rights, then sold the property back to Bass. Glen Avon ceased operations sometime around the late 1950s. The structure remains standing today as a private home.';

var str = 'At the time of this photograph wooden structure was at least 70 years old, having been constructed in 1830 by a Mt. Morris contractor named Russell Daboll. Its design was somewhat unusual in that wood was used even for the abutments upon which the span rested. At left side of photo is Gilmore\'s mill, operated first by Thomas and then his son Freeman. In 1913 the bridge was damaged by farm equipment and replaced by a metal one.';

Five miles downstream from here, the Genesee River empties into Lake Ontario at Charlotte, and the base of the falls has been a major spawning ground for salmon and lake trout until non-native fish like the alewife reduced their numbers. <a href="https://openvalley.org/exhibits/show/seth-green--home-waters">The fisherman Seth Green</a> ran a large commercial operation nearby in the lower gorge; ironically, his success also contributed to declining stocks and led to his experiments in pisciculture and eventually a fish hatchery located in Caledonia, NY. <br /><br />At the time of this photograph, an extensive engineering project recently had constructed Rochester Gas & Electric's Hydro Station #15--a portion of which is shown at left--and transformed the falls themselves. An 80-foot long concrete facing raised the falls to a height of 96 feet and created an intake dam 17 feet in depth. The building at right is a remaining part of the settlement called McCrackenville, chartered in 1821 and best known as an industrial site: flour and paper milling, carpet-making, furniture manufacture, a tannery. In 1850 the city of Rochester annexed the land as part of its plans for residential development along Lake Avenue; eventually it was remade as Lower Falls Park, from which visitors have a spectacular view of the gorge.

var str = 'At nearly 100 feet in height, the \"High Falls\" were a determining factor in the location of Rochester. Mills took advantage of the drop and the Genesee River\'s water flow in the form of mills, beginning in 1807 and especially in the years following construction of Brown\'s Race--which enabled numerous mills to operate along the western banks. Less than a mile upriver, the Erie Canal was routed so as to pass near this important manufacturing and milling location. At one point Rochester was milling more than 500,000 barrels of wheat flour per year before the wheat midge drastically curtailed production in the Genesee Valley.
In the postcard, at left of the falls is Rochester Gas and Electric\'s Hydro Station #4 (since abandoned), and crossing the river is a New York Central Railroad viaduct. At right is the Gorsline Building, reconstructed in 1888 as a shoe factory after a major fire that killed perhaps 35 workers. Structural problems nearly led to its demolition, but it was partially demolished and renovated during the late 1990s for use as office space.';
